You can’t deny by looking at this gorgeous girl that she has such a timeless, classic look about her. Her mom picked a little vintage-looking romper that only added to her little girl’s classic look.

It took her a little bit of time to warm up to me. While I tend to gravitate toward soulful, quiet looks on baby and children’s faces, a big toothy grin from a lovable baby (like this one) will always be welcomed.

During the planning process of this session, I chatted with the aunt and mother about their ideas for this one year old session. The aunt wanted to include some balloons and had a very clear idea of what she wanted. At the session, all the balloons were ready to go, perfectly coordinated with baby girl’s outfit. But guess what? Baby girl wanted nothing to do with them. We gave it our best and managed to pull of a couple of keepers.

What I loved about it (and why I’m sharing this story) is how her mom just rolled with it. I know that as a mom we often get our hearts set on something very specific and it can be so disappointing when our kids don’t go with it.

It is one of the reasons why I always stress focusing on the child, the personality, and with family sessions the bonds. An idea gone wrong can be a memory of what happened at the session and not necessarily what ruined the session.

I can share from personal experience about a session idea going ALL wrong–think tall grass field with a tick infestation from hell. Yet it did not ruin our family session. We fled the scene, got our self-control (yes, there was lots of screaming), and changed locations. It was definitely not what we planned, but sometimes it works out better that way. That family session is the one we talk about the most and we look back on it now and laugh.

As your photographer, know that I constantly think about your overall experience with me. Your experience will be tied to the images and every time you walk by a photograph on your wall from that session, I want you to remember how worth it it was to go through the effort to make those memories.
